What surprised me the most about Tunisians is the average person speaks 4 languages. In Canada and America I’d say most people don’t speak more than 2 languages. Tunisia is based 30 min from Italy, with a French influence, Egyptian, Italian and Turkish television channels and now the huge influx of English. Tunisians pick up languages and speak up to 8 or 9 languages fluently. They are incredibly intelligent people who take pride in their education rightfully so. The main language of Tunisia is a dialect of mostly Arabic mixed with French. French is so widely spoken I would almost consider the country as having 2 first languages. English is now quite prominent and I am get by with a moderate understanding of Arabic and English. If you speak Russian, French, Italian, German, Spanish - you can find many people here who are able to talk with you or help you out. I’ve even noticed over the years a large influx of an Asian community in Tunis.
